Flash Banner
Audience:
The target audience for the web banner will be the same target audience that the HTC Hero should be aiming at and that is:
What is the message that needs to be communicated?:
The message that needs to be communicated is that the HTC Hero is something out of the ordinary, intuitive and powerful enough to be a business professionals smart phone while being attuned socially to cater for today younger lifestyle consumers.
How will the Flash banner appeal to the intended audience?:
The Flash banner will appeal to the business professionals demographic through the outlining of the phones powerful features and this will be done in an interactive and exciting way as to appeal to younger consumers.
What are the designs for the visual appearance? (6 minimum):
My first idea was to create an interactive photo realistic scene of a rundown old city with decrepit buildings leaning inward, the buildings were to be made up of rival smart phone handsets that with a bit of photoshopping would be made to look ancient covered in dust and scratches, a HTC Hero would then descend on a beam of light towards the figure of a down trodden weary looking business man with arm outstretched.
- This I didn’t see much potential for user interaction in this idea and found it hard to turn phones into buildings using photoshop.
My second idea was to create a space invaders like game where the user would control a space ship comprised of the HTC Hero handset, the enemies to vanquish would be those of any business person; stress, deadlines, emails etc.
INSERT SKETCHES
How will the interaction work? (4 variations minimum):
The main interaction would be involved in the video game section, where the user would use the left and right arrow keys to navigate their spaceship and the spacebar to fir the HTC Heros weapon.
Does the interaction increase the ability to communicate the intended message? How?:
As stated above the use of a fun game theme would communicate the extraordinary capabilities of the HTC Hero and would appeal to a younger consumer demographic.

Current Advertising Campaign Research:
HTC are a Taiwanese-based mobile phone company who have been around for 12 years and aspire to be a major handset maker like Samsung or Nokia.
Never heard of them? It’s because they’ve been keeping a low profile letting the mobile phone carriers put their names on the devices.
But as of October 2009 HTC decided to step out of the shadows and make a name for themselves. HTC started putting their logo on the handsets they make and they invested in a multi-million dollar marketing campaign. The tagline for which was “You don’t need to get a phone, You need a phone that gets YOU”, the second tagline was “HTC Quietly brilliant” and the tagline for the HTC Hero in particular was a rather uninspiring: “HTC Hero, Everything you need for work and weekend”.
The major banner ad on the HTC website was the following:
In terms of television advertising HTC decided not to focus on individual phones as they claimed customers would soon get tired of Apple iPhone style ads of spinning phones and applications.
